FLOW - marking the mill race

Beneath our feet, below our city, the Mill Race still flows under Lancaster.

On the 30 April 2022, join us to create a snaking, overground impression of the buried Mill Race stream, using just your voice and simple actions. The line will start at the point at which the Mill Race emerges into the Lune close to Millennium Bridge and will stretch upstream towards the Grand Theatre and beyond.

Flow is being created in collabloration with Loz Kay. It is commissioned by Lancaster Arts and produced by Alice Booth with support from Steve Fairclough.

BLINK - resist!

Installation exploring how we respond to the everyday directions we are given. The work was created in collaboration with a group of young producers in Dewsbury UK as part of the Paper Peace programme. It was shown in Dewsbury, Peterborough, Sheerness and Stoke-on-Trent.

The work was commissioned by Creative Scene and Emergency Exit Arts.

Explore how everyday sounds and rhythms can be used to make music in this online exhibit created for the Science And Media Museum with the Univerity of Nottingham.

The exhibit detects the rhythm contained in uploaded photographs which are used to create loops of sounds inspired by Delia Derbyshire and the BBC Radiophonic workshop. The online space invites collaboration with people from anywhere in the world.

boombox

Loud and bold inauguration of the site of the new UCLAN building in central Preston. A samba band marched through around and up the hill playing their drums and the space itself in an unmissable winter performance.

Developed in collaboration with Loz Kaye and Worldwise Samba, Boombox was presented during my period of residency on site in Adephi Square for In Certain Places.

A crowd of figures inspired by Manchester, each made from a reconstituted cigarette packet donated by people from Salford who made a pledge to quit smoking for good. Commissioned by Ogilvy for Pfizer.

We are increasingly working with companies, musuems and galleries and sharing our expertise to realise their creative briefs and develop unique, interactive visitor experiences.

Skills include coding, electrical and electronic design, lighting control and 3D fabrication. Clients include Tagra Lighting, 24 Design, Silverlining Furniture, Imperial War Museum North, Delapre Abbey, and Birmingham Libraries.

huddersfield conversation

Commission from Kirklees Council to develop a new artwork for the town centre.

AUDIT, RESEARCH, PREPARATION
Being new to Huddersfield I first had to orientate myself in the town. It was important to understand the area within which the project was to take place and know more about the context within which it had been commissioned.

Work in this stage included attending the symposium at Huddersfield College, walking and cycling tours of the town, and curated walks with council officers including to the Textile Centre Of Excellence.

EXPERIMENTATION

I developed three micro-projects that each explored different approaches to the commission.

THREADS
A new development of a long standing project using thread to create large scale, temporary sculptures in public space. Working in collaboration with composer Eve Harrison, we devised a work that would weave sculptures throughout the town centre as a performance.

As well as an exciting debut of this new piece, this created opportunity to spend time and carry out a detailed examination of a number of sites through the town.

MIRROR CART
I had been particularly struck by Huddersfieldʼs architecture. I created a cart made of mirrors that would form a collage of vignettes of the skyline. Revealing details and features of the town that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Working in collaboration with Scott Farlow, two days were spent pulling the cart on routes from the town centre out to the ring road.

OUTCOMES
Each micro project resulted in outcomes with potential for development into a full blown work. While considering opportunities to use mirrors, I realised that the essence of the work was about audience's response to them and the discussions they invoked.

I have designed a sculpture for the town centre that captures the essence of Huddersfield. Its ribbon form references both Huddersfield’s textile past and the local geography of its location, nestled in hills glimpsed constantly from the town. Its surface is stainless steel polished to mirror finish. Its curve is constructed from many flat faceted sections set a different angles, each reflecting a different vignette of the townscape. Viewed together they form a cohesive but deconstructed respresentation of their surroundings.

The work is intended to encourage pause, interaction and dialogue about the town, its architecture, its place.

We create unexpected encounters which gently ask you to slow down, stop for a moment and take in your surroundings in the hope that you'll notice something new.

We are artists, makers and creative thinkers, with strong social focus, inspired by spaces and the public realm. We use light, sound and interactive technologies to create the unexpected and seemingly impossible.

We create original and engaging works - multi-sensory experiences, often integrating visual, audible and interactive elements, that invite discovery, develop a sense of place, and encourage audience interactivity with both the work and each other.

We have wide expertise. We develop exciting and ambitious projects. Our creative thinking is backed by the experience to deliver. We work across varied locations, indoors and out, in harsh environments and on sensitive sites.

Our work ranges from community consultation and design and build for the public realm to bespoke creative technology development for private projects. Clients include local authorities, arts organisations, national museums and international companies.

Access to art and creativity is empowering. It engenders a feeling of having a voice, develops a profound sense of identity, ownership of and belonging to the places where we live, and provides a forum from which to explore our own surroundings and links to others.
