folding table
Folding table imagines folding a paper aeroplane as an industrial craft process.
The work comprises specialised templates, lasts, formers and tools that help a user accurately complete each step beginning with cutting a sheet of paper through to folding out the wings.
The work explores how we tend to approach making - often thinking that something would be far too complex for us to do ourselves, whereas it's actually quite straightforward if broken into smaller steps.
The work was commissioned by the National Festival Of Making 2017. Aeroplanes were folded for the full duration of the festival. We estimate that around 650 were folded in total!
The work was generously supported at the festival by Graham and Brown who supplied the wallpaper from which the planes were folded.
